Afghan military aren’t corrupt…they’re inept, says U.S. general

This doesn’t bode well….Reuters news agency has reported that the U.S. general who brought the NATO coalition’s combat operations in Afghanistan to an end after over 13 years of war says Afghan security forces are “inept” at basic motor maintenance and are struggling to sustain troop numbers.

Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson said the Afghan units can’t fix their own equipment. “This is inept,” Anderson told Reuters. “This is nothing to do with corruption. This is purely ineptitude.”

Another challenge was sustaining troop numbers in face of soaring casualties and defections, Reuters reported. Nearly 20 percent of army positions were unfilled as of October, it added.

“Recruiting and retention aren’t matching, and of course don’t forget losses,” Anderson told Reuters.
