"INVASION OF THE BED SNATCHERS" by Wolf William Solkin

After Ste. Anne's Hospital was transferred from Federal to Provincial jurisdiction well over six months ago, Quebec has already filled four vacated floors with non-Veteran patients ( aka "civilians") from other facilities,  while Veterans Affairs Canada utilized whatever empty beds became available on the floors still occupied by Veterans, to admit eligible Veteran replacements from their waiting list of same.

Of late, however, it has become clearly evident that, on one of the remaining floors still housing Veterans, as beds have become vacant due to the  inevitable process of normal attrition, no new Vets have re-occupied same, and that floor is, in the near future, scheduled  to be totally given over to still more non-Veteran patients, as part of the planned total "civilianization" of the hospital, resulting from this spate of "Invasion of the Bed Snatchers'.

The official party line /talking point espoused by Veterans Affairs Canada,  to justify not granting first priority for admissions to Veterans, as was prominently pledged in the official Transfer Agreement, maintains that this turn of events arose from the very arguable  finding that  there are no  more Veterans remaining on the (suddenly dried-up) waiting list !

Upon closer examination, could it  possibly be the case that, as time went on, the bar of eligibility criteria for bona fide Veterans to gain admission to Ste. Anne's has, without fanfare and almost imperceptibly, been raised so high, that it has now become virtually ( but not virtuously)  impossible for any Vet to qualify, unless he/she is really "dying to get in" ?

Where there's smoke (and mirrors), there's  bound to be ire.
