Jonathan Pitre is fighting “a bit of a cold” in his new home away from home in Minneapolis but had warming news from home Saturday.

More than 500 people turned out to raise $50,000 in a “Marchons pour Jonathan-Butterfly Mile” event in the Jonathan’s hometown of Russell, about 40 kilometres east of Ottawa.

“It was a fabulous success,” Tina Boileau, Jonathan’s mother from their apartment in Minnesota.

“It was a terrific symbol of solidarity from the home front (in Russell).”

Jonathan and Boileau travelled to Minneapolis in August for his treatments.

Boileau said she and her son were settling in nicely in Minnesota, where snow has “sugar-coated the grass.”

Still, there’s some concern about Jonathan’s cold, because fevers could prompt a return to hospital.

Jonathan, 16, a Grade 11 student, has a severe form of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a blistering skin disease that complicates every part of his life.

He received a stem-cell transplant Sept. 8 which was not successful, and is due to have another in March.

“We’re taking care of the little things, just loving the news from home, looking forward.”

Donations can still be made through the Debra organization’s website.
