Erik Karlsson is still an Ottawa Senator.

He was yesterday, he is today.

Tomorrow?

Like the star defenseman, we’ll have to wait and see.

Two new reports indicate that both the Dallas Stars and the Tampa Bay Lightning are still vying to get their hands on Karlsson.

Many had assumed that the Tampa Bay Lightning were the frontrunners – some still do – but Larry Brooks of the New York Post is reporting that the Stars aren’t done yet.

In fact, Brooks believes Dallas is now the frontrunner:

“Talks between the Lightning and Senators regarding a potential Erik Karlsson trade have subsided. Indeed, Dallas has re-emerged as the most likely destination for the two-time Norris recipient if Ottawa moves him within the foreseeable future.”

On Tuesday, the Lightning announced that they signed star forward Nikita Kucherov to a new eight-year deal:

Many assumed that the new deal would make it near impossible for the Lightning to fit Karlsson’s contract – and any future extension – under the salary cap.

Kucherov’s $76 million deal – which will keep him locked up until 2027 – may, in fact, provide Tampa with more financial clarity moving forward:

Kucherov, it should be noted, still has one year left on his current deal that carries a cap hit of $4,766,667.
