I believe that it is time to put out some words of wisdom. Well I call them that, and you can call them whatever you want.

I was personally told by both the Veterans Ombudsman and the Minister that our Facebook, Blogs and web sites are being monitored, for content and that we would be phoned and corrected if we are incorrect. This was also announced by the PMO some time back, but now I have confirmation that it is happening. We must all realize that, “BIG BROTHER,” is watching us and closely.

The Veterans organizing has Ottawa worried, if for no other reason then we are talking to each other and comparing notes. The VAC and the VRAB will no longer be allowed to continue to carry on as normal in a total secrecy bubble as they have in the past. Veterans want to know both what is being done and why and we want some consistency as well as fairness. We Veterans will no longer continue to go around believing that we are alone, that we are the only ones who are being treated this way and most importantly that we have no choice in the matter.

But further we have to realize that we are putting the fear of God back into Ottawa and how they are dealing with Veterans. One problem with this is that they will now also start to place plants (if it has not already taken place) within our groups to create descent, mistrust and if at all possible to prevent us from ever joining forces. So what you say on Facebook and even how you express yourself may become a question for the future. Threats, even in jest can be used against us.

Many people are correctly pointing out the differences all of our groups have from one another, but I haven’t often seen the arguments on what we have in common. First and foremost we have the desire to help Veterans, each in our own way but never the less help Veterans. Secondly and I would say probably just as important is that in order to accomplish the first we all need to change the minds and the direction of  the people in OTTAWA or more correctly  those in the Government, which I suppose makes them the enemy or at least the ones we have to defeat, if we were talking in military terms.

During WW II most of the countries were not in much agreement and even the Generals from country to country didn’t really get along. One up-men-ship was rampant among Generals and the Monty – Patton personality conflicts comes quickly to mind, but they reluctantly and with a common foe, worked together for the greater good. This is what we need to do.

I don’t care if any of you agree with me on everything, in fact I would be scared if you did. I am not asking anyone to forget their feeling and to all of a sudden to like each other, it wouldn’t be natural. I don’t care what your political views are, which branch of the forces, corps, regiment or unit you came from,  your religion, colour, race, sex or sexual orientation are. There is only one thing we need to do and that is to present ourselves as a single front to Ottawa. This can only be accomplished if we all accept that all Veterans issues are of number one importance and if we all check our egos' at the door. The individual soldier or General isn’t as important as the complete battle, and even though each group alone can and I hope will continue to tackle the individual problems same as before, but we need to present to Ottawa a united front, a front with numbers that they will have no choice but to listen and hopefully act.

We are Ex-Military, we can do this, we have to do this because Ottawa only understands numbers... Big numbers... Big numbers of  angry voters.

But never forget that we are being watched... closely and not always in a friendly way. The Queen Victoria doctrine of, “Divide and Conquer,” is still alive and doing well in Ottawa, DND, VAC and the VRAB.

We all need to begin and prepare for the November 5th Rally, Vigil or whatever else you want to call it and we need numbers thousands of Veterans, their families, Legion members and civilians to show up, or we need to accept the fact that we will never win concessions from Ottawa until they are dammed good and ready to offer them to us.

We can always get back to our petty squabbles after the big battles are won.

A "Veteran" -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve
-- is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check
made payable to "Canada," for an amount "up to and including"
their life.
